Millions of Texans were left without access to electricity for days in the midst of sub-freezing temperatures. Due to Texas’ policies of energy deregulation, the situation spiraled out of control.
Regulators and policy makers must learn from the mistakes of Texas’ deregulation. Deregulating utility markets makes it impossible for legislators and regulators to protect the reliability of the power grid. Without that structure, consumers are left with great uncertainty and dramatic price volatility.
Restructuring can also leave customers vulnerable to deceptive business/marketing practices, price hikes, and service disruptions with little to no prior warning -- potentially raising utility bills by 10,000% like just happened in Texas!
